Alright, so here's the dish: I reinstalled systemconfigurator with the PREFIX=/usr on both the client and the server, and I don't know why but now everything works! I just got to see my shiny Ubuntu workstation installation booting up to a login prompt! What a relief! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! (Though, also, I figured out during the day today as I played around with OpenSUSE on that computer that the keyboard was screwed up and I switched it out for a working out, though I doubt that was the problem.)
