Alright, so here's the dish:

I reinstalled systemconfigurator with the PREFIX=/usr on both the client and
the server, and I don't know why but now everything works!

I just got to see my shiny Ubuntu workstation installation booting up to a
login prompt!

What a relief!

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!

(Though, also, I figured out during the day today as I played around with
OpenSUSE on that computer that the keyboard was screwed up and I switched it
out for a working out, though I doubt that was the problem.)

Whew! I'm going home.

Again, thank you, Andrea!

an "echo $PATH" gives me /usr/local/bin as the second directory in the list on
both server and client.

I haven't tried installing systemconfigurator with a prefix option, no. Should
I do this on both the server and the client? Do I need to reinstall
SystemImager after this?

Hope this finds you having a good day!

OK, so it's not a problem due to different architectures... Are you sure
that /usr/local/bin is in your path? have you tried to install
systemconfigurator with:

# perl Makefile.PL PREFIX=/usr
# make
etc...
