In Ubuntu 10.10 and earlier, yes. In 11.04 they seem to have broken the
option - or rather, it disables grub requiring UUIDs, but grub-update still
generates configuration files containing UUIDs.

I don't recall the exact specifics of disabling grub's UUIDs (although I
have them written down somewhere). But most people at the time were just
manually editing their grub files.
