Site of the Day for Friday, August 24, 2001 "Interior Desecrators - Ugly Rooms for the Beautiful People" The inimitable James Lileks has done it again. James Lileks, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a well-known journalist, novelist, broadcaster and all-round curmudgeon. The "Interior Desecrators" is just one section of his enormous website. "This site is a labor of hate. A hate that burns like your knees burn after you=92ve slid a yard on a harsh synthetic rug. A hate I=92ve nourished and stoked for decades. I came of age in the 70s, and there were few crueler things you could inflict on a person. The music: bad. The culture: dreck. The politics: miserable. The world: nasty. Hair: unspeakable. Architecture: the worst it had ever been in human history. No oil. No fun." - from the website "Interior Desecrators" is a vast site (in excess of 300 pages) over which you may while away the weekend. The author has taken a 1975 Better Homes and Gardens Interior Design book, scanned in many of the photographs and prepared a withering commentary on these examples of ultimate '70's style. If you were an adult during the '70's or are simply curious as to what posed as high decorating style during that era, this site may leave you helpless with mirth. http://www.lileks.com/institute/interiors/bhg/index.html A.M.
