Software of the Month - Calypso

No, not the music; no, not the washing machine.

Are you fed up with using an e-mail program which seems to be a virus
magnet? Help is on the way from one of the best e-mail clients out there,
which has recently moved into the freeware category. Calypso Mail will
handle the most exacting demands a power user may ask of it, while still
presenting an intuitive and friendly interface for those with more modest
requirements.

The range of features provided by this application is outstanding. With
support for multiple POP accounts, easily configurable templates, as well
as a bulk mail facility, Calypso provides all the bells and whistles. The
filters make it easy to move dreaded spam directly into the trash, as well
as being able to use different .wav files for each sub-filter, which means
you can know exactly who has sent you an e-mail, even while working in
another application, when Calypso is polling for mail.

Calypso uses a sensible interface, which really comes into its own if you
have a large number of POP accounts. Instead of listing all the accounts in
the left side pane, the accounts are grouped in a folder, which opens in
the main window, making it much easier to sort your mail into whatever
folders you set up. Naturally, there is a spelling checker.

One of the unique features of Calypso, is its ability to run separate
versions of itself on the same computer, with each of these versions
configured separately. This is of inestimable convenience to those who must
share a computer with others and would like to keep their e-mail separate
and private.

Although Calypso is no longer being supported by the company which
originally released it, it is so much better than most of the e-mail
clients out there that it will take years for the rest to catch up.
However, there is also a very helpful mailing list support group at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/CalypsoMail

The List intends to go hand in hand into the sunset with Calypso.

The free download has been removed from the developer's website but the
List has tracked Calypso down on the servers at RocketDownload, where a
screenshot is also available. See for yourself at:
