Borough GOP chairman John Friscia lambasted Democratic Rep. Mike
McMahon's office for issuing a Certificate of Special Congressional
Recognition to Thomas Good, photojournalist and editor of Next Left
Notes, which "offers coverage of ongoing struggles - from a radical
perspective," according to its Web site.
Friscia slammed Good and Next Left Notes for its views, and for
Good's proclamation that he helped "re-member" the radical 1960s
group Students for a Democratic Society. The group gave birth to the
Weather Underground, which called for the violent overthrow of the
U.S. government.
"By bestowing such a high honor on a person who has supported such
causes demonstrates Mike McMahon's liberal agenda despite his
conservative press releases," said Friscia.
McMahon spokeswoman Lauren Amendolara called Friscia's statement "inane."
She said Good's certificate was part of batch requested by and issued
to the Peace Action of Staten Island group. Good, she said, was
recognized for his work as a photojournalist by Peace Action, not by
Congressman McMahon's office.
Said Ms. Amendolara, "This latest accusation by the GOP is not only
meritless, it also highlights how they have nothing of substance to
hold against Congressman McMahon or the stellar job he has been doing
for the people of Staten Island."
