'The Almost Cut My Hair Tour' pays tribute to CSN&Y

If I had the juice to put together a multimedia online column with
music and pictures linked to the copy, there would be a minimum of
several songs from the '60s/'70s rock icons Crosby, Stills, Nash &
Young, to include "Almost Cut My Hair," followed by a link to a photo
spread featuring classic rock photos from Carmel Valley local Tom
O'Neal and Santa Cruz folks Tai Stills and Fred Arellano.
But if I did that you may not find it necessary to go to Don
Quixote's in Felton Saturday night to hear music by the legendary,
harmonious, California-based group performed by top-notch
professional musicians or to view the photos in person.
The concert is being dubbed "The Almost Cut My Hair Tour" and it
features the many talents of Gary Burr, originally from Connecticut,
but currently in Nashville, with a cast of seasoned studio veterans
and several guys from Santa Cruz, including brothers Scott and Craig Owens.
It's kind of a summit meeting between the two coasts in tribute to
the music generated throughout the careers of the musicians who made
up CSN&Y, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and Neil Young.
Starting with Stills and Young in their Buffalo Springfield years, to
the momentous gathering of Crosby, Stills and Nash, through Young's
joining the band and to each of their solo careers, the music will
unfold for your listening pleasure.
Burr, who has performed the show before on the East Coast to great
success, has gathered his friends from that show and will join with a
few Santa Cruz locals to put on the first show west of the Continental Divide.
Known for his Pure Prairie League work and writing more than a few
hit songs for other performers, such as Juice Newton's "Love's Been a
Little Bit Hard on Me," and the song written for Ricky Martin and
Christina Aguilera, "Nobody Wants to be Lonely," Burr brings his
singing and guitar playing talents to the fore with this program.
Just a few of the songs to be offered are "Wooden Ships," "Marrakesh
Express," "Rock and Roll Woman," "Cowgirl in the Sand," "Suite Judy
Blue Eyes," "Ohio," "Heart of Gold" and "Rockin' in the Free World."
In a phone conversation with production manager Arellano, a Monterey
native who moved to Santa Cruz and has worked in concert production
for many years, he explained the week's activities and how the
concert evening would unfold.
Along with his vintage photos, Arellano explained that our local
famous rock photographer O'Neal (the photo artwork for the cover of
CS&N's "Déj Vu") and Tai Stills (sister to Stephen) will display
their photos at the venue Saturday.
The photographers will take orders for the prints rather than sell
them directly at that time.
Stills' photos chronicle a tour with her brother's group Manassas, as
well as when he was child, while O'Neal will bring his many shots of
famous rock stars taken when he worked the Los Angeles music scene,
and Arellano's work includes shots taken at the Monterey Pop
Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival and the Big Sur Folk Festival.
Tickets for the event are selling well, so be sure to act fast if
you'd like to experience this special show.
The music begins at 8p.m. and will also feature breaks in the CSN&Y
action with original music by several group members and their sons.
Tickets are $12 and those under 21 can attend with a parent. Call
