A re-enactment of the March 1960 attempt by then-Voorhees Junior College students to integrate two drug stores in Denmark was staged Friday.

The original group of 14 students entered the old Talbert's Drug Store six times and each time were refused service because blacks were not served at the soda fountain at that time.

The group also tried to get served at the old Carolina Cut Rate drug store.

Police eventually took the students into custody on charges of disturbing the peace.

The charges were dropped the same day, and the students were turned over to officials of the Episcopal Church-sponsored college.

During Friday's re-enactment, some of those portraying the students are shown being escorted to jail by a Bamberg County Sheriff's Office official.

Among those participating in the event were two of the original protesters - Herman Young, who is now the sheriff of Fairfield County, and George Hamilton, who became the first black to head a state agency in South Carolina under former Gov. John West.
