'Hair' playing at Pantages

The winner of the 2009 Tony Award for best musical revival, "Hair,"
is now playing at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood until Jan. 23.
It is the story of a group of hopeful, free-spirited young people who
advocate a lifestyle of pacifism and free love in a society riddled
with intolerance and brutality during the Vietnam War. It was a
lightning rod for New York's hippie subculture.
It is a rock musical, which aspires to be not against anything but
for something. There is not an ounce of fat on the stage. It is
constant singing, dancing, clapping and running up and down the aisles.
Among the many musical numbers, such as "Let the Sun Shine In,"
"Aquarius," "Hair" and "Good Morning Starshine," there are many
memorable songs, which have endured since the play originated in 1967.
When the musical came to Hollywood in 1968, it played just two blocks
from the Pantages. It was in an existing theatre, which was re-named
the Aquarius Theatre in honor of the show's hit song, where it played
for two years.
If you think you're going to see an equivalent of "Guys and Dolls,"
think again.
On a quieter note and completely opposite from "Hair," consider
seeing "The Fabulous Big Band Show 2011" presented by San Gabriel
Valley Music Theatre. It is one performance only on Saturday, Jan.
29, at 2 p.m. at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse. It's a great
pleaser for fans of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., The
Andrews Sisters and the orchestra's of Glenn Miller, Count Basie and
Duke Ellington.
