Donovan is set to be given a lifetime achievement award by the BBC in recognition of his career. Initially, Donovan was a controversial figure in British folk music. With his cap and American affectations the singer appeared to be a pop version of Bob Dylan, an image enforced by his massive success. However beneath this was a sensitive artist. Sure, Donovan is capable of descending into the depths of whimsy, but the singer has also crafted some of the most enduring anthems of the counter culture. Turning psychedelic years before it became fashionable, Donovan made groundbreaking forays into world music. Later travelling with The Beatles to India, he remains a charming and engaging performer. Now the BBC intends to recognise Donovan's career. The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards will give the singer a Lifetime Achievement award, with the ceremony set to take place in London on February 7th. The Glasgow born songwriter will perform some of his classic songs, backed only by his trusty acoustic. The move comes as Donovan prepares to look back over his career. The classic 1966 album 'Sunshine Superman' was a huge influence on the burgeoning psychedelic movement, and is due to be re-visited. On June 3rd the singer will perform the album in its entirety at the Royal Albert Hall. In a statement Donovan insisted that the idea came from his wife. “This year of 2010 Linda and I celebrate our ruby anniversary and when I asked my muse what she wanted to do, she said.. ‘Perform the complete Sunshine Superman album at the Royal Albert Hall’. Her wish is my command!"
