Fonda's real message - Opinion

In response to the letters which referred to Jane Fonda as a traitor, I
would like to offer a different viewpoint.

I have not only "checked the record," I was fortunate enough to be
present at one of Fonda's campus speaking engagements at the University
of Florida in Gainesville after her return to the United States in 1972.

The stated focus of her trip and the film and still pictures she showed
to us convinced me that her main emphasis was on the death and suffering
of North Vietnamese women and children, otherwise known to the military
as "collateral damage." Rape, torture and murder of women and children
go hand in hand in most military confrontations, as they still do. Even
in South Vietnam, our so-called "friends" and some of our military, were
guilty of these and other crimes.

Yet Fonda also stood against the war alongside the Vietnam Veterans
Against the War, and was awarded an honorary position as a national
member of that group. This showed that she was not against our troops,
only our military leaders who promoted that illegal war.

The VVAW is an organization that is still working today to promote peace
while supporting our fighting men and women in the military.

Jane Fonda may have made a few mistakes (i.e. being photographed beside
an anti-aircraft weapon), which she admits today.

But her main focus was to try to alleviate the suffering of the
Vietnamese civilians who were suffering as a result of a war that the
vast majority of us now admit was wrong. I still work for peace through
the organization Code Pink, our stated goal being "Pro-Soldier,
Anti-War!"
