Survivor from Kent State shooting to speak at Honors

Alan Canfora, a participant in the anti-Vietnam War student protests on
May 4, 1970 at Kent State, will be speaking on the UA campus this week.
His talk, entitled "Kent State 1970: the Misunderstood Tragedy and the
May 4 Movement for Truth and Justice," will take place Thursday, March 3 at
1:45 p.m. in the Honors Common Room located in The University of Akron Honors
Complex.
According to Canfora's website, he was waving a protest flag in front
of kneeling, aiming Ohio National Guardsmen during an anti-war confrontation on
the Kent State campus. When shots were fired, Canfora was hit in the right
wrist. He managed to find cover behind an oak tree away from the shooters.
Four Kent State students were killed and nine, including Canfora, were
wounded within a period of 13 seconds, when 67 gunshots were fired into a crowd
of unarmed anti-war students.
Today, Canfora lives in Barberton, where he serves as chairman of the
Barberton Democratic Party and an election official employed at the Summit
County Board of Elections.
Canfora's lecture, arranged as part of the English Department Senior
Seminar Literature of the Vietnam War, is open to all faculty and students.
