Sixties chart-toppers set to play Blackfriars

ORIGINAL members of trans-Atlantic chart-toppers Manfred Mann will play
Boston’s Blackfriars Theatre and Arts Centre on Friday.
The Manfreds formed in 1991, reuniting key members of the Sixties pop group
known for such hits as 5-4-3-2-1 and Pretty Flamingo.
The group found themselves in the vanguard of the so-called British Invasion of
America alongside The Beatles and The Animals (and ahead of the Rolling Stones)
as Do Wah Diddy Diddy shot up the US charts in 1964. It would go on to become a
number one on both sides of the Atlantic.
The band would score their second number one with Pretty Flamingo (a song
regularly played live by Bruce Springsteen during the early part of his career)
and third with the Bob Dylan-penned track Mighty Quinn before the decade was
out.
The Manfreds include original front man Paul Jones, keyboard player Mike Hugg
(who would later score a solo hit single with the Likely Lads theme) and lead
guitarist Tom McGuinness, who before joining Manfred Mann played alongside
another 18-year-old guitarist Eric Clapton in The Roosters.
They will be joined by former Family member Rob Townsend, a one-time drummer
for the legendary Memphis Slim and Duane Eddy.
Marcus Cliff, who has worked with such artists as Al Green, Mark Knopfler and
Rod Stewart, plays bass guitar.
Simon Currie, a performer of more than 25 years, completes the line up on
saxophone/flute.
Audiences can expect many of their hits along with a mix of jazz and blues
songs of their best known albums.
The band promise a full evening’s entertainment with a few surprise renditions
of their work, not only with The Manfreds but also their individual connections.
The show starts at 7.30pm.
