The buzz is out.
"I never expected this type of response," said Washington C. H. resident,
Gary Huffman, about his 60's group's reunion concert. The Four Speeds (whose
signature song is a cover of the Righteous Brother's 'Unchained Melody')
will perform in a benefits concert at the Ohio University - Chillicothe's
Shoemaker Center on April 30.
The group had formed as a teen band in the 60's. The group members were
between the ages of 15-17. They performed at a teen center named the Sugar
Shack that invited bands to come in and showcase their talent.
The Four Speeds popularity grew so rapidly that they became the house band
for The Sugar Shack. They went on to capture four Battle of the Bands
competition titles in the short two years that they were together.
The members included Gary Huffman who plays drums, Keith Scaggs on keyboard,
Tom Worley who is lead guitar, Mike Corcoran on bass, and Dave Dunkin as the
bands lead singer.
The group parted ways for a variety of reasons after graduation. Huffman's
wife, Karen Helmick-Huffman, researched and reunited all the members of the
group together last August.
"It was a tearful reunion I tell ya," said Gary Huffman. "We had not seen
each other since about 1967 or 68."
The group planned a to get together and do a charity concert for fun and was
introduced to the 'Rock For Tots' charity by promoter Paul Pollard, who has
also worked with heavy hitters such as Taylor Swift.
Rock for Tots is a community organization that raises funds for impoverished
children in rural communities.
"Pollard is doing a tremendous job promoting this event. It is bigger than
we ever expected and for such a great cause," Huffman said.
The concert will also feature The Mods, JB & the Downshifts, and the
Wegians, which are all groups from the 60's as well.
"We are excited about the great response to this charity concert," said
Huffman. "Tables (which sold for $100 each) are already sold out and hotels
in the area are booked solid." Harmon also states.
All proceeds from the event go to the charity. Bands are not compensated for
their appearances.
Harmon mentions that the group has already been approached for a 2012 class
reunion concert gig but says, "I haven't played the drums since the 70's so
I just want to see how this concert goes first."
Concert tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Diamond Center in
Chillicothe or at Clinton Electric in Washington C. H. (ask for Gary).
Tickets can also be purchased at the door the night of the concert.
"I just want for people to have fun and I hope that we live up to people's
expectations," says Harmon. He also states, "I hope this brings back great
memories for people, it has for me."
