The Beatles' Yellow Submarine 3D remake hits rocks
telegraph.co.uk | Mar 16th 2011
Hollywood producer Robert Zemeckis was due to have presented his ideas for
the film to Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.
John Lennon's widow Yoko Ono and George Harrison's widow Olivia were also
due to take part in the presentation having given their backing to the
project.
According to the Hollywood Reporter magazine Disney decided to pull the plug
on the movie after Zemeckis's latest animated film "Mars Needs Mums" bombed
at the box office over the weekend.
Zemeckis, the Oscar-winning director of Back to the Future, Forrest Gump and
Cast Away, had wanted to use cutting-edge motion capture technology for the
remake.
He had lined up Hollywood stars Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly, Peter
Serafinowicz and Adam Campbell to play the Beatles.
The film would have featured 16 of the Beatles' hits, including Sgt Pepper
and Yellow Submarine, which was sung by Ringo Starr in the original movie.
Zemeckis had secured the co-operation of the Beatle's company Apple in
making the film.
But his use of motion capture technology in films like Mars Needs Mums and
Beowulf have not been a box office success.
Critics said the films have a "creepy feel" to them and have failed to match
the spectacular success of other animated films like Toy Story 3.
Zemeckis is said to have left Los Angeles for his home in Montana after
Disney told him they were not backing the project.
He is free to take the project to other studios but Hollywood insiders said
the cost would deter many from giving a green light to the project.
The "Mars Needs Mums" film took just $6.9m at the box office over the
weekend but had cost $150m to produce.
Hollywood critics expect it to be one of the most costly flops of all time.
