Stanford committee recommends bringing ROTC back

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) -- A Stanford University committee is recommending
that the university allow the U.S. military's Reserve Officers' Training
Corps program to return to the campus.
After an absence of nearly 40 years, a faculty committee recommended to
President John Hennessy on Friday that the university invite ROTC back to
the campus.
The program was barred from Stanford in 1973 amid strong anti-war sentiments
and anger over the military's ban on gays and lesbians.
The Faculty Senate is expected to take up the issue during its April 28
meeting.
Opponents to ROTC say military coursework undermines the university's
academic independence. Supporters say future national leaders should
appreciate and share the burdens of national defense.
