Richard D. Jehn, founder Thorne Webb Dreyer, editor

Chellis Glendinning : Decepcin in Bolivia (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478357/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/chellis-glendinning-decepcion-in.html
) by Chellis Glendinning / The Rag Blog. In an insightful and colorful
dispatch from Cochabamba, Chellis reports that "things are not going well' for
the government of Evo Morales -- Bolivia's first indigenous leader in 500
years. Morales' 2005 election unleashed an aura of hope among activists,
environmentalists, and traditional native peoples, but his "two-faced"
administration has fallen well short of its promise, and the country has been
wracked by massive protests from his former supporters.

Dr. Stephen R. Keister : Saving Granny from Vouchercare (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478358/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/dr-stephen-r-keister-saving-granny-from.html
) by Dr. Stephen R. Keister / The Rag Blog. In his latest report from the
health care front, the good doctor reflects on the "culture of fragmentation"
in the mainstream media that results in obsession with issues of little
importance. He also expresses concern about the conservative think tanks, with
their lack of transparency, and fears that they can help the Republicans
define the debate about Medicare.

Kate Braun : Summer Solstice is Festival of Light and Energy (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478359/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/kate-braun-summer-solstice-is-festival.html
) by Kate Braun / The Rag Blog. June 21 marks the Summer Solstice when Lord
Sun enters Cancer and Lady Moonis in her third quarter. Balance is shifting,
Kate tells us, as "once again the Oak and Holly Kings execute their ritual
dance or battle." (The Holly King emerges triumphant.) The Summer Solstice is
a festival of light and energy, fertility and abundance, creativity and
vitality.

BOOKS / Christine Shearer : How a Handful of Scientists Obscured the Truth (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478360/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/books-christine-shearer-how-handful-of.html
) by Christine Shearer / Truthout. In their book, Merchants of Doubt, science
historians Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway uncover the history of a small group
of Cold War scientists and advisers who battled anything, including scientific
research, that might threaten their vision of American free enterprise -- even
if that meant the science on acid rain or the hole in the ozone layer. This
small group, Shearer tells us, has had an outsized role in shaping public
opinion and policy.

Margarita Alarcn : Five Reasons to Remember the Pentagon Papers (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478361/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/margarita-alarcon-five-reasons-to.html
) by Margarita Alarcn / The Rag Blog. This week the Pentagon Papers were
released in full, four decades after Daniel Ellsberg, a Pentagon defense
analyst, leaked them to the press in an act of defiance that helped speed up
the end of the Vietnam War. Maggie Alarcn provides a uniquely Cuban
perspective on that event and its ramifications.

Militant ambivalance?: Evo on the rocks.

Lamar W. Hankins : Jack Kevorkian and the Right to Die (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478366/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/lamar-w-hankins-jack-kevorkian-and.html
) by Lamar W. Hankins / The Rag Blog. Jack Kevorkian -- who assisted in the
suicides of 130 people --died June 3 of natural causes. Lamar tells us that
Kevorkian created publicity about the right-to-die issue "in his own quirky
way," but did little to make that right available to all Americans, and his
ethics were called into question. But several groups "with serious intent and
compassion" are continuing the efforts to advance the right to die with
physician assistance in the U.S.

Harvey Wasserman : Nukes 'Don't Need No Stinking Fire Protection' (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478367/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/harvey-wasserman-nukes-dont-need-no.html
) by Harvey Wasserman / The Rag Blog. In John Huston's Treasure of Sierra
Madre, armed bandits tell Humphrey Bogart they are federal agents. But, when
asked for proof, their leader proclaims, "We ain't got no badges... I don't
have to show you no stinking badges." Now, as the state's attorney general has
said that the Indian Point nuclear facility's failure to comply with federal
fire safety requirement, "is both reckless and unacceptable," operator Entergy
has, in effect, told New York: "We don't need no stinking fire protection."

Jordan Flaherty : Louisiana Civil Rights Activist Gets 15 Years on Drug
Charge (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478368/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/jordan-flaherty-louisiana-civil-rights.html
) by Jordan Flaherty / The Rag Blog. Civil rights activist Catrina Wallacewas
sentenced to 15 years in prisonfor distribution of a controlled substance.
Wallace, whose brother was arrested in the "Jena Six" case, helped build a
movement that brought 50,000 people to a 2007 march in the northern Louisiana
town of Jena that eventually led to freedom for the six young men. Jasmine
Tyler of the Drug Policy Alliance said that, in instances like this, we're
using prisons "for the people we're mad at."

Tom Hayden : Big Push for Peace in Afghanistan (
http://e2ma.net/go/7103538936/208591448/223478369/32516/goto:http://theragblog.blogspot.com/2011/06/tom-hayden-big-push-for-peace-in.html
) by Tom Hayden / The Rag Blog. The New York Times has finally acknowledged
that a significant withdrawal from Afghanistan is a real possibility being
considered by the White House. Hayden says that the "Democrats finally have
chosen to unite and align themselves with public peace sentiment." However, it
is not clear that Obama will heed the rank-and-file voters who have soured on
the war or if he will bend to the wishes of the Pentagon.

Assisted suicide: Jack Kavorkian and the right to die.
