National Rainbow Gathering 2011 Part 3

m.examiner.com | Jun 28th 2011 2:41 PM ???Like most of the others, I was a seeker, a mover, a malcontent, and at times a stupid hell-raiser. I was never idle long enough to do much thinking, but I felt somehow that my instincts were right. I shared a vagrant optimism that some of us were making real progress, that we had taken an honest road, and that the best of us would inevitably make it over the top. At the same time, I shared a dark suspicion that the life we were leading was a lost cause, that we were all actors, kidding ourselves along on a senseless odyssey. It was the tension between these two poles - a restless idealism on one hand and a sense of impending doom on the other - that kept me going.??? -Hunter S. Thompson Outside the small store in Cougar, WA now hangs a tie dyed banner which reads, ???Welcome Rainbow Family???. With more travelers headed to the site of the 40th National Rainbow Gathering more hitch hikers are finding it a little easier to make it to their sought after destination. As you pass these travelers in town, despite their more times than not dirty appearance, their smiles are bright and the common sense of family and gratefulness at any sign of kindness runs deep in this crowd. As with any large crowd, though, there are some misfits. ???I???ve seen a lot of younger kids headed out to this gathering not knowing exactly what to expect,??? a local resident who has been shuttling hitch hikers told me. ???The thing I am most worried about is their tendency to have a blind trust. They look at everyone as family at these gatherings, and they need to know they need to protect themselves as they would in any other situation. Just because the reputation of the rainbows is kind, there are some bad people out there that will definitely take advantage of this situation and these folks that really do mean well,??? he said. It has also been reported that in an attempt to discourage locals from picking up these travelers local and federal law enforcement have told drivers they will be the ones held accountable if drugs are found on any of the passengers they are taking to the gathering. After speaking with a law enforcement officer in Woodland, WA he claimed that theoretically this could be true, but more than likely would not hold up in a court of law.
