The media regularly features celebrity adoption announcements that
often give us to ooh and aah over the latest additions to these
families. Child adoptions among the stars is a growing trend and seems
to be next big thing following the rush of mini-dog additions as
wardrobe accessories - what has the world come to. Hopefully, the rush
to adopt is preceded by thoughtful consideration to the futures of
these child and the long-term commitment that is required out of this
process.
Angelina Jolie's adoption of her son Maddox is probably the most
heavily covered adoption announcements to be featured in the media
recently. Brad Pitt has also been quick to jump on the adoption wagon
train, having recently applied to allow these two children to legally
take on his last name, as he moves towards marrying their adoptive
mother.
Even on a local basis, adoption announcements seem to be on an
increasing trend. This particularly true among the wealthy and
accomplished. The obvious increase in this sector is likely
attributable to their ability to pay the exorbitant fees associated
with the whole adoption process, often exceeding as much as $15,000,
once the entire adoption is completed. These wealthy families seem to
be willing to pay very high fees to allow them to adopt children and
bring them home, often preferring to choose from foreign orphanages
where common issues are more related to poverty, hunger and disease
rather than social, emotional and substance abuse issues, common in
our more developed nations. The horror stories associated with
adopting children with substance-abuse related issues has moved these
parents to open their homes to children simply needing a love, food to
eat and access to quality education.
The long-term effects of removing these children from their homelands
and culture are yet to be revealed and understood fully. It's often
felt that their need for the basics in life survivor, supersede the
need to stay attached to their culture roots. The issues and
complications of being out-of-touch with their own world remains yet
to be seen. In the meantime, the love and generosity displayed by
their adoptive parents has to have a positive effect on these
children.
