It doesn't crash. It puts up a generic NSDocument alert that says the file could not be loaded, and the console log has messages about invalid cross-references. One problem is that it can display intermediate content successfully, but I guess the final notification will cause it to load the final content eventually. Now that I think of it, it may have reloaded at least once while PDFView was still doing its delayed layout, since it jumped to an odd location and I couldn't figure out what was going on.
