Very nice, I'd over looked this and I'm glad to know about it.  
However, it's no longer relevant to my real question because...

Totally cool. Actually, the workflow is:
1. Select, option-select, select.
2. Click, shift-click, shift-click.
3. There is no step 3.

This is much better and more logical than any of the implementations  
that I'd thought of.
