Just to make sure we're on the same page:

What we're doing here is creating highlight notes, not selecting text.  
The highlights may look like selections, but they're not. You'll be  
using the note tool in highlight mode throughout.

If you hold the option key down, the highlight note tool cursor will  
change to a plus, and then you can drag over a block of text to create  
a multi-line highlight note that is contained within the drag area.

If you have several highlighted notes, such as a partial line in a  
text column followed by a block of full-width lines and another  
partial line, you can join those three notes into one by clicking the  
first note and then shift-clicking the remaining two.
