It's indeed been added as an alternative to the (weird) beamer  
behavior. In order to be able to show notes, you need to have notes.  
You need to open another PDF with the same number of pages (it assumes  
a 1-to-1 map between the presentation and the notes). You can pass an  
option to the beamer class to create the notes file.
