Yes, that's as to be expected, as Daily is the default check interval. You just must have set it to weekly at some point recently, even if it's just for a moment. The problem is just that when you choose Never it won't display that on the next launch, even though the preference IS still set to Never (i.e. it won't check for updates). So the problem is in the display, not the actual preference. However, if you chose Never about at least a year ago, and never touched it afterwards, it would always properly display Never.
