To amplify what Christiaan said, the bookmarks point to the absolute path for
each item bookmarked.
For instance, the file foo.bar might sit at
/Users/Johndoe/Documents/foo/foo.bar
Unless an item you have bookmarked on the first computer can be reached
following exactly the same path on the second computer
/Users/Johndoe/Documents/foo/foo.bar
the bookmark will fail silently.
It is impossible for a simple bookmark to work any other way (there is nothing
in a bookmark.plist that would allow it to do a search on your computer to find
a file of the name you happened to have bookmarked. After all, who is to say if
it did have that capacity that there wouldn't be five different files of the
same name (there are many file names on my computer that get used more than
once? Bookmarks really have to just point to a path.)
On the other hand, if you choose to have the same username and the same file
folder structure on all computers you interact with then the bookmarks are
quite happily portable.
