I was attempting to activate a link using the "Select" pointer, which made sense to me. It is the "Text" tool that works.
Problem solved, although logically it seems it should be the Select tool, since activating a hyperlink is "selecting" it. Maybe an addition to the FAQs: "How do I click on a hyperlink to go to webpage"? A. Use the "Text" tool.
