I know that if wishes were horses, beggars would ride, but...

I usually want to make my window as narrow as possible so as to leave as
much screen real estate as possible for other windows. I almost always use
the "Search PDF" function and not the "Find" function because the context
shown is makes things so much easier to find the occurrence that you want.

The problem I have is that when I make the contents pane narrow, the Search
PDF text entry box collapses down to something that is barely usable and
completely illegible.

Has the author of Skim thought about putting the search dialogs (both for
Search PDF and Search in Notes) in a different location than the side
panes? Or perhaps having two lines at the top of each side pane—one for the
view icon and one for the search text?

I am not a user interface guru (hardly!), but it would be so appreciated if
Skim users could just type in search string in the "Search PDF" box without
having to resize the pane (and, usually, resize the window too) before
using the search function.
