I just checked in 10.13.1, and I saw two things wrong. First of all, it looks
like we do it correctly: the anchored note icons are not drawn when you choose
to hide notes. this is also the only thing we do. The extra colored squares for
anchored notes should not be there to begin with, no matter what you choose.
But those are drawn by Apple, and there is no way to get rid of them, not even
using private PDFKit methods (I tried very hard, to no avail.) I reported this
to Apple, but they give absolutely no response on this. Also, I saw that other
note types are not hidden when you choose Hide Notes. This is fully Apple’s
responsibility, and I reported this bug to them.
