I use Skim as the PDF viewer for LyX, as do many others.

A few days ago the reverse search process quit working. Reverse search is where one Shift-Command-Clicks on a word in Skim and LyX comes to the front and moves its cursor to the corresponding location in the LyX document display window.

I have checked the settings at https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/SyncTeX over and over and over. Yet, reverse search doesn’t work.

I have used this combination, LyX and Skim, for years. It’s a little tweaky because you have to type in some settings into Skim and LyX preferences and document settings. But nothing changed that I know of. It just quit working.

The only thing that has materially changed recently is I started using Backblaze as a cloud backup a couple months ago and I replaced my internal hard disk with a solid state drive. I don’t see how that would affect anything.

Other than that, nothing has changed. Same Skim, same LyX, same document, same OS.

Has anyone else see this problem?

Skim 1.4.41
LyX 2.3.2
macOS 10.11.6

No idea really. But is there anything in the Console.app logs from Skim? And did you check whether the Sync preferences were in fact correct? Could it be that there is a permissions problem with the LyX executable?

Christiaan

I’ve attached a Console log with the filter set to “Skim”. Here is how I made it. I cleared the display in Console, then launched LyX by double-clicking on a LyX file called Rationale. I rendered a preview. Skim opened. I switched to Skim and Shift-Command-Clicked in Skim. LyX came to the front without moving the cursor. I saved the Console output to a file and attached it with this note.

I hope this list takes attachments. If not I’ll re-send with a paste.

Both Skim and LyX are in /Applications.

Here are my Skim settings in Preferences -> Sync:

Preset = Custom
Command = /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyxeditor
Arguments = "%file" %line; /usr/bin/osascript -e 'tell application "LyX" to activate’

Note that the last part of the argument is recommended by the LyX folks to make LyX come forward after scrolling.

The behavior I’m seeing is that LyX comes forward but does not move the cursor and scroll as necessary.

Here are my LyX settings:

Preferences -> File Handling -> File Formats -> PDF (pdflatex) -> Viewer = Custom with command = open -a Skim.app $$i
Preferences -> Output -> General -> PDF Command = /Applications/Skim.app/Contents/SharedSupport/displayline $$n $$o $$t
Documents -> Settings -> Format -> Synchronize with Output = checked

I’ve followed the LyX wiki here: https://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/SyncTeX

I’m super stumped.
