Well, that should just work. So what *exactly* are you doing? Are you holding the Shift key while you click on the second highlight, while the first one was already selected? Then they should just be joined. Perhaps you misunderstand what joined means here? It does not mean making a continuous selection, it means creating a single note out of the two selected ranges.
