Streaming Media West 2000--Deja Vu, Part Deux

WHEN: Dec. 12-14, 2000
WHERE: San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, CA
COMING BACK: June 20-22, Long Beach Convention Center, CA

HIGHLIGHTS:

Richard Landry's remarks in yesterday's issue (SMW part one) sparked
several lively comments from readers:

"Maybe I'm biased, but this seems mean-spirited and unfair. Okay, I'm
definitely biased, and it's definitely mean-spirited and unfair. Ah
well." --Joey Manley, www.StreamingMedia.com

"Mr. Landry, a slight difference between then (early 90's) and now is,
um, I don't know, a small number of technically unsavvy people using a
word processor aka PC. vs. potentially a few hundred million people as
your
audience." --E.M., www.Schwab.com on Landry trying to compare
Streaming Media West 2000 with Intermedia 1990.

"Good review - very fair. I paid around $7,000 to be at the show (pay
hotels, parking food, travel, etc). P.S. - you forgot to talk about
ballroom b or a (whatever) this is where I was stuck and it really
looked like a ghost town at times. I did however get to talk to the
vendors next to me and find out what they were up to. As a matter of
fact the show really reflected a giant networking event, where
BusDev. People and marketing were looking to find someone making money
in the streaming space."--M.K.

"I was at Streaming Media, and am also the author of a book called
"The Education of A CD-ROM Publisher." One of the chapters...has some
background on the Intermedia show. The parallels between the two
industries are so evident. Thank you for pointing that out.
Perspective is precious and I think your article had
perspective." --Chris Andrews,
Livecast.com

"I agree that the most viable business model in streaming media is the
streaming media conference business. I went to SM Europe and was
astounded by the range of attendees, the lack of knowledge from most
exhibitors, and the amount spent on gimmicky toys that are meant to
get people interested in a company. I didn't learn a thing while I
was there." --A. from the U.K.

EXHIBITOR RATINGS, KUDOS AND CRITICISMS:

We surveyed a sample of 56 out of over 500 exhibitors, asking booth
attendants to rate Streaming Media West 2000 in terms of 1) Show
Attendance by Non-Exhibitors; 2) Presence of CEO and Decision Maker
Types; and 3) Overall Satisfaction with Dollars Spent (The Value
Question).

We used a scale of 1-5, five being the most, the best, the grandest
and one being the loneliest number, the dismal, one. We permitted
decimals and fractions for the terminally wavering.

RATINGS [Rating (# of Exhibitors giving it)]:

1) Show Attendance by Non-Exhibitors: 1-2 (4); 2.5-3 (20); 3.5-4 (22);
4.5-5 (10)
----Techie Average of 3.11607142857 [for biz dev & marketing-types:
3.1]

2) Presence of CEO and Decision-Maker Types:  1-2 (3);  2.5-3 (18);
3.5-4 (22); 4.5-5 (13)
----Techie Average of 3.1875 [for biz dev & marketing-types: 3.2]

3) Overall Satisfaction with Dollars Spent (The Value Question): 1-2
(2); 2.5-3 (16); 3.5-4 (26); 4.5-5 (12)
----Techie Average of 3.24553571429 [for biz dev & marketing-types:
3.25]

Interestingly, these ratings nearly follow a bell curve, and are
surprisingly consistent across categories--the 35 attendees we
surveyed provided an average rating of 3.25 as well. Since 2.5 is
true average, Streaming Media West was definitely judged "above
average" by both exhibitors and attendees.

KUDOS from Exhibitors:

"Made alot of great contacts."
"Very impressed with the quality and high-level of all the exhibits."
"Exhibit Show Hall impressive."
"It's a glamorous show--people like to be here."

And from we at NMCC: The exhibit hall was very clean and well-tended.
The exhibits were indeed impressive, a higher quality than we've seen
at many other shows.

 CRITICISMS from Exhibitors:

#1 most often repeated: "Streaming Media East was better."

Also:

"Food is awful and awfully overpriced--typical show-hall grub."
"Part of this place is like the acoustical boondocks--this part of the
exhibit hall is too isolated--no traffic. They shouldn't have
included it."
(Referring to the far left side of the hall as one walked in from the
front.)

On the sessions: "Any way you try to sell it, who wants to pay big
bucks to see a bunch of industry talking heads?" (Most of the floor
exhibit attendants that we spoke with did not attend sessions).

On Steve Ballmer: "Oh--you mean Steve emBallmer? Look at my eyes
buddy--they's glazed, man. GLAZED." (Reporter pulls away ever so
slightly from crazed, glazed man).

COMMENTS FROM ORGANIZERS/PRODUCERS:

"The show ran very smoothly. We've seen good traffic, and I think
overall the show has met expectations. In the past, deadlines have
been much tighter than they were here, so we felt we had time for
better planning and execution. In New York, for instance, the whole
place was smaller and tighter--that may be why people think it was
better attended there."
--Ryan Lincoln, Streaming Media West Director

HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM OTHER TRADE SHOWS/EVENTS: It doesn't.

SCHMOOZE FACTOR: Very strong, especially at the parties. i-Beam
hosted a dainty wine/cheese/chat party at a little schwanky place in
town. Directly across the street, Live365 and Streaming Media cranked
the music and danced till dawn, breakin' the law, breakin' the law.

At the Live365 party, this reporter met and yelled over very loud
music at Jerry Brandt, KPMG's New Media Guru and a man with a good bit
of old-fashioned panache, always refreshing in this ongoing
free-for-all.

KILLER APP DEMO:

We liked this alot! From DoTell (www.dotell.com), it's an audio file
generated by a phone call from wherever you may be. Sales Manager
Eric Twardzicki [EMAIL PROTECTED] simply handed me his cell phone
and I made a short broadcast from the floor of Streaming Media West.
I was surprised by how simple it was--amazingly simple--and the
surprise shows in my voice. Definitely a killer audio broadcast app
for a world that needs more simplicity. To hear more:

To a writer/editor slaving away, poring over data, and...composing
(sigh)--nothing, Ladies and Gentlemen, nothing, is more heart rending,
bone chilling, or gut wrenching than the dreaded email from a
disengaged reader with the subject line that reads: "unsubscribe."

In all fairness, these crushing blows land for a variety of reasons.
Perhaps the individual received the missive by mistake; perhaps he or
she is moving on or closing email, common in today's turbulent
dot.community. Perhaps the person has simply tired of our drivel.
Or, more likely, perhaps they simply feel...left out. If the latter
is the matter, then we believe we have a solution:

Portrait...of an UNSUBSCRIBER This week: Christian Gray

Christian Gray has yet to be placed on the Digital Coast 100. To our
knowledge, he has never been named an "e-fluencer of the week" by the
i-Street Reporter. Yet the man has done more to further the cause of
tech schmooze than almost, even, Brad Nye. Gray runs the SoCalTech
Calendar (www.socaltechcalendar.com), So Cal's leading tech events
list. And, as he says at his website, www.management-inc.com,

"Since 1994 Christian Gray has been involved at the core of the
commercialization of the Internet. His detailed understanding of the
underlying technology of the internet combined with his instinct and
analysis of the emerging demographic on the World Wide Web, have
enabled Christian to position himself as one of the leading
consultants in the Internet business today."

So we salute Christian Gray, and the other unsubscribers out there, as
we bid him, and them, a final, tearful adieu.
