they are related but not inter-operable
they are both subsets of xml and have sim,ilar functionlity.
In IE5.5 Microsoft also tested a version ofSMIL called SMIL Boston
the .smi file is nothing to do with smil but SAMI closed captioning - which
is basically the text that is viewable in the caption area of WM
much of what we consider to be smil is actually real text and real pix which
are Real Netwroks proprioetary extensions for smil
