Once upon a time there was this boy born into the
richest family in Washington state. The rich boy's
mama happened to be sitting next to the head of IBM,
the third, at a meeting of the United Way in
Washington, D.C. and said why don't you do me a favor
and buy my son's operating system for your new home
computers. The Third said why yes but the boy was very
afraid when he heard this because he didn't have an
operating system to sell so he and his friends went
looking for one and bought the first one they found,
cheap. So they had this operating system to sell but
wouldn't you know, it didn't work right. So they stole
the code from another operating system known as PCM.
The folks at PCM didn't mind so much because at that
point everybody seemed down on computers ("Do not
fold, bend, spindle or mutelate me...") so anything
for the cause was a positive. After all it was only
code and code should be free for everyone, right? I
think they were into smoking a lot of dope but I'm
not sure. Anyway, you may ask why people wouldn't buy
the original, more reliable PCM operating system for
their new IBM Home Computer instead of the dopey old
Microsoft with ripped off code? Well silly, mama made
sure that IBM priced PCM at four times what the
Microsoft operating system could be had for.
I guess you know the rest of the story.
