Glenn,

I do speak from experience, I have seen the inside of the music industry, I
co-founded a label under BMG Canada in 1996, they paid 4% of CD sales, which was
better than the usual 3%, I know the record company pay all the bills, but these guys
threw money around with no regard, and didn't work very hard. I can provide examples
if you want.
As for risk, I agree, but until now there were few options for musicians to get
their music out there. I don't think Napster was out for money, just to break new
ground, remember it was only one guy who created it, it became corporate because of
the press it got.
With my comment about video production, I just meant that there is more involved,
it is not just audio. There are more steps and people involved to creating a
production, its a more harder science than music, but still a soft science. (Soft
science=Art/ Hard science=Building space stations)( Just learned that one).
I guess my feelings about copyright were expressed earlier, I got to know musicians
when I worked with them, most don't really care about getting rich, they just want to
make music, this is their nature. I know they need homes and food, but the whole
structure of the industry is so inefficient, and they don't really benefit in the end,
unless they are among the chosen few who make the big time. The musicians that I worked
with are only now getting computers and starting to network with each other, I help
them by providing my resources for free. That is how we got the attention of BMG to
start, unfortunately fame took it's toll on a key player, and things fell apart.
Everything is changing so fast, people have different ideas on how others use the
things that they create, I think building networks of people is the way.
Realistically, I could run a music/video production and distribution business from
where I sit, if networked with the right people with the same beliefs. I might not
get rich, but I will be paving the way for something that is inevitable, and I will
pay my rent by using
my other talents.
Glenn, I hope your business succeeds, I see that you have a free offering, it's just
a matter of time before people appreciate this, whatever business models evolve.
