    The file format is, yes.  But there are some differences that keep them

    No.  They include an ISO compatible video format, but not support for
audio or the file format.

    Nope.  Windows Media is making an ASF formatted file, which is a
proprietary format QuickTime can't read, nor will ISO MPEG-4 players be able
to read it.

    You're on the right track - MPEG-4 is designed to be that.

    Support isn't widespread yet.  Apple has announced that they will make
"MPEG-4 a first-class media type under QuickTime."  So, some future version
of QuickTime will be able to read ISO MPEG-4 files.  Microsoft hasn't
announced what their plans are here.
