Iodine:

MPEG-4 as a whole is NOT based on QuickTime. This is a common
miscommunication.

Only the MPEG-4 file format is based on QuickTime, and "based on" is limited
to being conceptually compatible. The MPEG-4 file format is sufficiently
different from QuickTime that you will not be able to play MPEG-4 with a
QuickTime player until Apple makes a specific MPEG-4 file format
filter/plug-in/translator.

There are several parts to MPEG-4. Everyone should do themselves a favor and
read the following document:

http://www.cselt.it/mpeg/standards/mpeg-4/mpeg-4.htm

With all the MPEG-4 buzz starting, this will degenerate into complete
disinformation if people don't understand the breadth of the standard. Most
things related to "MPEG-4" that you hear about are actually just MPEG-4
Video. Few people are doing MPEG-4 Systems (incl. the file format), and even
fewer MPEG-4 Audio.

There is a large educational process here - don't be left behind !!

MPEG 4 is based on quicktime, right?

And WMP's .wmv files can be made ISO MPEG4 compatible, too.

So, one would think that quicktime should be able to play an ISO MPEG4
compatible file [especially if re-suffixed to .mpg]

But it doesn't.

The implications if it did are that we have finally hit on a good quality
cross platform stream format.

Can anyone tell me where my logic and/or knowledge is faulty?

Thanks,

Ed
