I too, followed your directions and was astonished to see it only a 
degree or so from Alpha Centauri, my favourite star(s).

For your interest, here's a report from a fellow Astronomical 
Society of Victoria (Australia) on the object, I'm sure he won't 
mind me posting it here:

Hi again

Just to add to my previous post. Using information from RASNZ
website I was able to observe Toutatis from 9.00pm to about 10.45pm
last night, from Mill Park, using my 10 inch SCT at 60x. I knew from 
my research that Toutatis had a high apparent speed of almost 3 times
the diameter of the moon at its closest approach to Earth. Having
the correct coordinates I waited. At 9.00 pm I noticed the asteroid
moving very quickly in the field of view and I observed the asteroid
visually for most of the night. I also acquired 6 images with the ST-
7. By 10.45pm the asteroid became more difficult to observe due to
its fading and my house getting in the way.
