I too, followed your directions and was astonished to see it only a degree or so from Alpha Centauri, my favourite star(s).
For your interest, here's a report from a fellow Astronomical Society of Victoria (Australia) on the object, I'm sure he won't mind me posting it here: From: "anthony140266" Date: Thu Sep 30, 2004 2:57 pm Subject: Toutatis Hi again Just to add to my previous post. Using information from RASNZ website I was able to observe Toutatis from 9.00pm to about 10.45pm last night, from Mill Park, using my 10 inch SCT at 60x. I knew from my research that Toutatis had a high apparent speed of almost 3 times the diameter of the moon at its closest approach to Earth. Having the correct coordinates I waited. At 9.00 pm I noticed the asteroid moving very quickly in the field of view and I observed the asteroid visually for most of the night. I also acquired 6 images with the ST- 7. By 10.45pm the asteroid became more difficult to observe due to its fading and my house getting in the way.
