Rod,
I purchased a used Compaq Armada M700 a couple of months ago and just this last week used if for the first time to run my LX200 Classic with CDC for real (had to wait for a cable and clear skies). Seemed to work fine - though I'm fairly new to both, so expect I'll get better with experience. Not sure about a 1700 - but my 700 is running Windows 2000 @ 600MHZ with 262 MB memory. Seems to run fine and quick to me. One nice thing about an older laptop is it will probably have a serial port (newer ones don't I understand) which is what is needed (for the LX200 anyway) for the cable to the scope. I understand folks have to use a USB to Seral converter with newer laptops and have heard both good and bad experiences getting everything to work. This is my first laptop so I really can't compare it to any other. I'm not sure if other makes or models have this feature, but I just last night figured out how to set and use it's 'hibernation' mode which should come in real handy when trying to conserve batteries in the field. And if you haven't discovered yet, HP bought out Compaq, so all the technical information about the Armada (including manuals) is now on the HP website. http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Nav?h_pagetype=s-001&h_lang=en&h_cc=us&h_product=89335&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&cc=us BTW - I paid $350 for mine. .....David >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [skychart-discussion] Suitable laptop? >Date: Sat, 4 Dec 2004 10:10:54 EST > [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] ------------------------ Yahoo!
