I fixed it. There were 2 problems, first, the ABRACOM 4MHz oscillator was a dud. Second, there was a microscopic crack in the earth track about 3 cm away from the oscillator. Once that was repaired and the osc replaced with an MEC 4MHz, the interface worked as advertised. Am I happy or what? Now I can attach the position encoders to my 12" and join the gang at the VicSouth Star Party and actually find objects!!
