By "telescope menu bar" do you mean the one on the lower right side of the screen? That's greyed out on my home computer (no scope connected), too
Click "telescope" in the _top_ toolbar and see what you get. On my home computer, the resulting menu is all greyed out except "select scope interface", and clicking that shows options for "Meade", "Ascom", or "none".
