Field width can be manually adjusted by clicking the 4th button from the left on the tool bar (magnifying glass). Move the slider left or right for fine adjustment. For me, the mysterious patterns are usually caused for one of two reasons: 1) "Checkered" patterns of a few grey colors: Your field width is too small for the survey you are viewing. You need to "zoom out" pretty far to see the details of some surveys such as EGRET and COMPTEL. 2) Large white circles or blocks: These are survey coverage areas. Your field width is too big if you can see these. You need to "zoom in" closer to see the details. This is typical of the HRI and PSPC surveys. After experimenting with some of the more popular surveys I've discovered some optimal field widths: High-res surveys DSS 1 (optical) : 40' max (alert if exceeded) DSS 2 (optical) : 25' max (alert if exceeded) VLA FIRST (radio) : 40' max (hangs if exceeded) HRI (x-ray) : 25' - 30' max PSPC 1° (x-ray) : 40' max Low-res surveys EGRET(all) (gamma) : 30° minimum (to see overall patterns) COMPTEL (gamma) : 50° minimum! (to see overall patterns) Enjoy! ramblur
