The problem is each catalog stored at Vizier has its own set of different types
of data. Every catalog will have RA-dec coordinates, but beyond that the list
of data that's useful for a catalog will vary. Star catalogs will have
magnitude, and maybe color, and possibly proper motion. For a nebula or galaxy
catalog you want the size and type, but the "types" will be different for
galaxy vs nebula. And other details may be included. More specialized
catalogs will have more specialized data. And what happens if a whole new type
of object is discovered? So there's no universal way to do this. Each Vizier
catalog has a readme file that shows how the data is stored, and catgen appears
to do a pretty good job of giving you ways to include the data you want. But
Vizier has to be flexible because of the many types of data that might be
stored, so there's no way to make it any simpler than it is.
