No, the problem is actually simple, and is on our end. Patrick uses a + sign in the url it sends to Vizier when the dec is positive, which is not good, because + is one of a handful of special characters used for specific things in urls, so if it's used for other purposes, it should be encoded as "%2B" (without the quotes). I'm hoping Patrick can make this change, but for the time being, if you really need it, there's a way to get the data. When you select the particular online resource and the window to get the data opens up, look for the "copy from" line. That's the url CdC sends to Vizier. The problem is in the first variable, after the "url=http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/VizieR?-" part. The next part is something like "c=25.342843+1.653649" This is the coordinates of the center of the field, RA 25.342843 (that's in decimal degrees, so it can be >24), and dec +1.653649 degrees. For negative dec, it would be "c=25.342843-1.653649", which works, but the + sign for positive dec screws it up. So to get the data, copy the _full_ line from the "copy from" line (it extends well to the right of the visible window), paste it into your browser's address window, then change the + sign to %2B. Send this, and you'll get a Vizier page with the data. The data part of the page will look something like this: 1 0916-0017896 025.340895 +01.650473 16.53 18.20 1977.5 2 0916-0017904 025.346981 +01.651481 1991.2 3 0916-0017890 025.333603 +01.652014 18.43 20.08 1977.5 4 0916-0017907 025.352706 +01.649009 1994.7 5 0916-0017889 025.330464 +01.654214 20.95 1976.7 (more lines deleted) To get the data into CdC, look in your ..\ciel\cat\externes\vizier_usnob folder for the file "$temp.cat" (I give only the example for USNO-B1.0, because for the others you still have the option of using the ESO Skycat source). This is actually just a plain text file, so copy and paste the data from the vizier page over any data already in this file (or I suppose you could append it, which is a nice trick for getting multiple fields). But there's one difference: the data page includes an index number at the start of each line, and you don't want these in the $temp.cat file, so these need to be deleted. Delete the first 5 spaces/digits in each line, leaving two spaces at the start of each line before the next set of numbers (which is the catalog designation number). Unfortunately for any decent size field of USNO-B, this will be a long list of stars, so deleting the first 5 spaces/digits in each line gets tedious. If I had a little more spare time right now, I could write a little basic program to do that, but I do programming so rarely that every time I try to do even very basic stuff, it takes me an hour or two to remember how. So change and save the $temp.cat file, and then there's one more detail: CdC won't recognize the change immediately. So make some small change, like re-centering the FOV slightly, or zoom out, then zoom in, and it will redraw the chart, with the new stars. -John > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > > Peter, the fix you refer to circulated last August (to change the > URL reference to the alternate 'Harvard' site) unfortunately worked > only for a short time, before that site too suffered the same > problem and stopped working.
