2.76 used several methods to add catalogs. Here's the reply I started to write before I realized that you were probably using v3, which I don't know much about:
-------------------------------------------------------------------- Many of these are from CdC's main download page, so they are either automatically installed when you install the program, or you install them just by clicking on them. If you downloaded the "basic package", then this already includes bsc5 (bright star catalog) and planets. If you downloaded the "complete package", then it also includes "satellites" and gcvs (general catalog of variable stars). If you only downloaded the basic package and then downloaded these catalogs separately from that page, then you have to install them separately simply by clicking on them. The Herschel and Messier catalogs came from CdC's "additional catalogs" page at <http://stargazing.net/astropc/external.html>. Instructions for installing them are on the top of that page. hcg (Hickson compact (galaxy) groups) is from <http://www.schoenball.de/astronomie/cdc/cdc_en.htm> (linked from CdC's download page) This should have a .hdr file.
