I've been a highly satisfied Cartes du Ciel user for some years with
Win XP and am now using it with Linux Ubuntu 8.04. I'm using the v 3
beta 0.1.4 version. On screen the software seems to work well;
however, when I come to print charts I am having problems. Whole sky
views print OK when set to portrait orientation but landscape
orientations of smaller fields of view do not print properly. The
chart is still printed in the portrait orientation but is truncated,
owing to the smaller width of the paper in this mode, and the alt-az
grid lines and constellation lines are additionally printed outside
the chart border. The printer is an HP Officejet 6310, set up as a
ethernet-connected local printer using CUPS. Other applications print OK.

A satisfactory work around, in case anyone else is experiencing
similar problems, is to print to bitmap. The resulting bitmap file
then opens in the default image application - in my case 'gimp' - with
which it can be printed. I am also able to configure the bitmap
printing option to a higher resolution (e.g. 300 dpi) than the 72 dpi
I am given for the printer, which improves chart appearance considerably.
