Charles,
you could go to http://www.ap-i.net and log an enhancement request for
this useful feature. It would indeed be nice if CdC kept downloaded DSS
images around in a cache like you're suggesting.
Meanwhile you could create your own cache by downloading DSS images
yourself. Google for ESO DSS download to find the URL. These DSS images
can be displayed in CdC.
