Under the Setup> Observatory, click the Horizon tab. You should check the "Fill 
with horizon colour" box. The "Show objects below the Horizon" should be clear. 
If that doesn't work, the there is a bug in the Mac version. I don't have a 
Mac.  A workaround would be to set a path to a horizon file and check the 
"Display the local horizon line". Creating your own is easy just a text file 
with the azimuth followed by the altitude. A file with zero horizons would look 
like this.
