Hello Marco, for an easy installation in ubuntu download a *.deb package from here http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/development_version
The latest package is "skychart_3.1-1271_i386.deb". Double-click it for installation. That's it. You can add all the additionall catalogs from here http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/download_catalogs of and the pictures from here http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/download_catalogs Again, download the *.deb package, that is skychart-pictures_1.0.0.1-3_all.deb For displaying the planets with their real surfaces (not only a symbol) enter at the command line "sudo apt-get install xplanet" Adjust the settings in settings menu (e.g. enter your observation place's ccordinates, download the latest mpc-files for comets and asteroids, ...) and there you are.
