As all the ARP objects are galaxies you should amend your ARP external file
definition to assign the object type as 'galaxy'. There's a special code;
'GALXY' if I recall correctly but I may be wrong.

The v3 symbol set (no, it's not user-configurable) is similar to that used
in SA 2000 and in Uranometria, with a passing nod to Megastar. Crosses are
used as a general catch-all class when the source data lists it as
'unknown', 'plate defect', 'non-existent' etc. Circles denote clusters of
stars, either asterisms, open clusters/globulars and galaxy clusters.
Squares/rectangles denote gaseous nebulae (bright and dark). Ellipses are
always galaxies. A small circle with a horizontal line through it (I
actually intended it to resemble Saturn) denote planetary nebulae.

Symbols are *directly* associated with catalogue object type. Ideally of
course, the object type symbol sets should be user-configurable, but
reproducing the same symbol set as a copyrighted source elsewhere (eg,
Herald-Bobroth) opens the door to some tricky IP issues. And designing a
unique symbol set when most observers are quite happy with Uranometria etc,
isn't easy.

Peter

Subject: [skychart-discussion] How to change the symbol of an objet visible
on the skychart ?

Hi all

I am using externals datas, especially for galaxies. I added the ARP
catalogue and the visible symbol on the chart is a little green cross, but
it's the same cross used for other datas, example IC catalogue.
Is it possible to change a symbol associated with a catalogue ? Example a
little circle, or a little square, or a large cross ... etc..

Thanks by advance

Christian
