You best download the latest version of skychart here:
http://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/development_version

>From the settings menu choose "sun system". You see tabs "comet" and
>"asteroid". Each has again tabs, one called "load MPC". Being online, do this.

Loading comet data is fast and after dowloading and automatic installation
click ok. Then go to the comet's "general settings" tab and check "show comets
in the chart".

Now go to tab "asteroids", to tab "load MPC". Also click "download", this file
is larger than the comet data ( appr. 1 MB), after download you are asked for
calculation, so click on "calculate", the go to "general settings" tab and
check "show asteroids in chart".

The downloaded MPC files are stored in your home folder ./your
name/.skychart/MPC
