Look in the Task Manager, Processes tab, and see how much of the CPU skype.exe is using. That should tell you if the problem is actually Skype, SkypePM (the Skype Plugin Manager), or something else. I may get corrected here, but I think SkypePM can take some considerable CPU time right after it is loaded, but that this doesn't last long.
I don't know why Skype itself would chew up so much CPU, or how going to an older version would help enough to worry about.
